The world becomes more human when we meet it.
Travel has convinced me that understanding grows when we encounter people, cultures and places for ourselves. A map can tell us where a country is. A headline can tell us what happened there. But walking its streets, hearing its voices, sharing its food and seeing ordinary life can change the way we understand the people who live there.
My hope is that these pages do more than show where I have been. I hope they encourage someone else to choose a place, learn about it, and go.
A little orientation
A peninsula with many personalities
Cape Cod stretches into the Atlantic from southeastern Massachusetts, with fifteen towns and a long relationship with the sea. The Cape people imagine from vacation photographs is real—but it is only one layer of a year-round community with working harbors, villages, artists, scientists, families and changing seasons.
A good visit is not only about seeing beaches. It is about slowing down enough to notice the different character of each town, the light, the history, the trails, the arts and the people who make the Cape a living place rather than a backdrop.
My connection
Home, not just a destination
I have lived on Cape Cod for decades. It has been the setting for work, friendships, music, art, ideas and the Cape Cod Arts Network. Many of the projects elsewhere on this site grew from wanting to connect the people and resources already here.
Including Cape Cod in a travel section may seem unusual because it is home to me. But every home is somebody else’s destination, and seeing a familiar place through a visitor’s eyes can remind us what is special about it.
